6 Natural Remedies for Eczema and Psoriasis (Plus 1 That You Wear)

Eczema and psoriasis affect millions of people worldwide. Both are skin conditions that can cause dry, itchy, and inflamed skin and can be triggered by several different environmental, dietary, and even mental factors. While there is no cure for eczema and psoriasis, there are many natural remedies that can help alleviate symptoms and improve overall skin health. Some are topical, some are food-related, but the most surprising one is actually something you wear…

What is Eczema & Psoriasis?

Eczema and psoriasis are both chronic skin conditions that cause inflammation and irritation. Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is characterized by dry, itchy, and red patches of skin that can be triggered by stress, certain foods, and environmental factors like pollen or dust. Psoriasis, on the other hand, is an autoimmune disease that causes the skin to produce too many skin cells, resulting in thick, scaly patches of skin that can be painful and itchy.

Natural Remedies

  1. Coconut Oil - Coconut oil is antimicrobial and helps combat inflammation, making it a great natural moisturizer for dry or itchy skin. You can use refined or unrefined coconut oil on skin, but unrefined contains more phytonutrients that fortify your skin against free radicals. Apply it directly to the affected area and massage gently until absorbed.
  2. Oatmeal - Oatmeal is a natural exfoliant that can help remove dead skin cells and reduce inflammation. It contains anti-inflammatory compounds that can soothe itchy skin and reduce redness. To use, add a cup of finely ground oatmeal to a warm bath and soak for 20-30 minutes.
  3. Tea Tree Oil - Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic that can help prevent infection and reduce inflammation. It contains antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe itchy skin and reduce redness. Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with a carrier oil like coconut oil and apply to the affected area.
  4. Aloe Vera - Aloe vera is a natural anti-inflammatory that can help soothe itchy, inflamed skin. It contains vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can promote healing and reduce redness. Apply a small amount of aloe vera gel to the affected area and let it absorb into the skin.
  5. Probiotics - Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help improve gut health and boost the immune system. Research suggests that probiotics may also help alleviate symptoms of eczema and psoriasis by reducing inflammation and improving overall skin health. Consider adding probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, and sauerkraut to your diet.
  6. Avoid inflammatory foods/drinks - Alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods can exacerbate flare-ups, so consider cutting these out of your diet or only enjoying them in moderation.
  7. Wear Natural Fabrics - Did you know that synthetic fabrics can irritate your skin? They’re made of petroleum-based chemicals that can aggravate skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis or cause inflamed skin, acne, and excessive sweating. Not to mention, they are often treated with even more harsh chemicals to make them waterproof or moisture-wicking. Natural fabrics are much gentler on your skin. However, not all natural fabrics are created equally. Some can be itchy or absorb too much moisture, once again presenting a problem for people with sensitive skin. Zenkai creates apparel from natural fibers designed to soothe irritated skin and work with the body’s natural cooling system. Using our Filium® technology, natural fibers are transformed into breathable fabric that repels sweat without the use of chemical treatments. The result is clothing that’s soft on skin (and the environment!).

There’s no one-size-fits-all treatment for eczema and psoriasis. One or a combination of these natural remedies might offer some relief. If you feel like you’ve tried everything, consider giving Zenkai a whirl. Our garments have successfully reduced rashes and irritations that synthetic fabrics are now known to cause.
